The 240-foot-long SS Islander was constructed in Scotland in the late 1800s. Reportedly the most opulent steamboat available, she was designed to traverse Alaska's Inside Passage. Many affluent tycoons and businessmen considered her to be their favorite ship. She departed Alaska for British Columbia in 1901.

She carried a gold bullion valued over $6 million in 1901 currency (about $187 million once inflation was taken into account) on board. She ran into an iceberg, which left her forward port severely damaged. In twenty minutes, she sank. Even with prompt excavation efforts, the Canadian government managed to recover a very small portion of the gold bullion that was on board.

Three ships from the West Indies Fleet were discovered, including the Capitana. From 1566 to 1790, Capitana's convoy crossed the Atlantic to reach colonies in Spain. The Capitana, also known as El Rubi, was caught in a hurricane in 1733. It immediately sank after running aground close to Upper Matecumbe Key. Divers were able to retrieve the riches on board, despite the crew's deaths. Salvage crews returned in 1938 to search for the last of the treasure, a process that took over a decade. One hundred and ten silver buttons and coins were discovered, together with fifty-two gold coins and forty feet of gold chains.
