It is believed that a typhoon destroyed the ship during its return journey from Tahiti, plunging it to the ocean's floor. Both crew members and prisoners descended from the ship. The $3.2 million hoard included silver coins, hacksilver, Carolingian and English jewelry, and ingots. It was one of the biggest Viking silver hoards ever discovered. The Vikings of Eastern England are thought to have sunk the treasure between 903 and 910 after being expelled from Dublin, as evidenced by the majority of the coins.
