Removing Unpleasant Odors from Shoes Unpleasant shoe odors are usually caused by bacteria thriving in moist, warm conditions. These smells can be persistent, but there are effective solutions to bring back freshness. Placing your shoes in a cold environment can kill odor-causing bacteria. If possible, leave them outside or on a balcony. Otherwise, seal the shoes in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer. Keeping them there for a full day or two will help eliminate the smell completely.
